Time for Change
I have sworn many times that I won't root for the Jazz until Jerry Sloan is retired and we are moving on. Many of us have no idea what it is like to have the Jazz without Jerry, he has been here for most of my life and it needs to stop. Don't get me wrong, I think that he is a good coach and has had some great years, but there is something that is holding him back from winning when it matters. I wish the Jazz had some guts and would give him the Marty Shottenheimer treatment! There can't be too many coaches who can go through this league with 2 of the best players to ever play in Stockton and Malone, have them in their prime at the same time and still not win anything! Sure we made it to the finals twice, but what good has that done us. How many of you could work at your jobs for 20+ years, never reach the big goal and still have your job? I am sick and tired of all the Jazz fans just being happy with a good team year in and year out. Sports is about winning...why are we playing the game, why do they keep score!? If you ask me I would be happy with a few losing seasons where we are trying to makes some good moves and get to the top. Let's take a risk - follow Darrin Williams tatoo - "No Guts No Glory." Sorry Jerry, but he looks like he is going to croak during a game and I think it's best to can him before it happens.

It goes back the Larry Miller philosophy that he would rather have "Good guys" there that winning. I remember when he was asked about bringing Allen Iverson to Utah and miller called him a punk. or every year when the draft was coming up that they needed to bring in a person with good character or a good role model. No on that would give the organization a bad rep. Also where he wouldn't pay the money to get the good players to come here. You have to pay the money to get results. Larry Miller didn't do that. I was always about bringing in the clean cut guy instead of the superstar. And I agree Jerry’s system is a good system and yeah that worked back in the day. But the league now is a different league. You’re not going to win by playing ball that worked in the 80's and 90's. Its a different game these days. Larry Miller was faithful to Jerry Sloan and I can see the Miller family carrying on that tradition. It is reasons like this why I'm not a Jazz fan
ReplyDeleteWell I am a little indifferent on the situation. I like Jerry Sloan but wouldn't care too much if he left. As far as his system I think it works fine. You say that he couldn't win even with Stockton and Malone, but who is to say that Stockton and Malone would have been that great without playing in Sloan's system. They sure would not have put up as big of numbers as they did. The system would work fine as long as you get all the right pieces. Look at the Lakers this year. They used the old triangle offense and it won them the championship. Also how many pick and rolls did they do!! So many. I am a firm believer in that it doesn't matter so much as what offensive system you use as long as you have the right pieces to fit the system.
ReplyDeleteYou may be right about the system..they all work if you can get the right players. the difference between what the Phil Jackson and Jerry sloan is a couple of things. Phil lets his players shoot the 3 ball which is a big part of the game now days and a lot of times a big 3 will put a team away for good. the other thing is that Phil still plays the game, he still gets the refs to call the games the way he wants (because if they don't he will complain in the post game interview) and he also still motivates his players. Jerry has been saying for the past couple of years that he can't motivate anybody, they have to want it bad enough themselves. As my job requires me to motivate and keep energy up I believe that is bull crap. what kind of coach doesn't motivate his players? Isn't that part of his job....to get the most out of what he has? Maybe the system is a fine system, but the style of coaching isn't working with these young players. thanks for helping me to clarify what I meant.
